How to Prepare for Your First Driving Lesson

Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Behind the Wheel

Booking your first driving lesson is an exciting milestone, but it's completely normal to feel a little nervous.

One of the most common questions we hear at Green Light Driver Training is, "How should I prepare for my first lesson?"

The good news is that you don't need to know how to drive before your first lesson. That's exactly what your instructor is there to teach you.

Whether you're learning in Glenelg, Brighton, Marion, Plympton, Blackwood, Morphett Vale, Seaford, Moana or anywhere throughout Adelaide's southern suburbs, your first lesson is designed to help you feel comfortable, confident and ready to begin your driving journey.

Bring Your Learner's Permit

Before your lesson, make sure you have your South Australian learner's permit with you.

Without it, you're not legally permitted to drive on public roads.

Keeping your permit somewhere easy to access before every lesson is a great habit to develop.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Driving is much easier when you're comfortable.

Wear clothing that allows you to move freely and choose enclosed shoes with a flat sole. Avoid thongs or heavy work boots, as they can make it more difficult to feel the pedals properly.

Don't Stress About Experience

Many students arrive having never driven a car before.

Others have only driven around a quiet car park with family.

Both are completely normal.

Your instructor will tailor the lesson to your confidence and experience, so there is no expectation that you'll already know what you're doing.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

Learning new skills requires concentration.

Try to get a good night's sleep before your lesson and avoid arriving feeling rushed or stressed.

If possible, eat something beforehand and stay hydrated so you can concentrate throughout the lesson.

Leave Plenty of Time

Arriving a few minutes early helps you settle your nerves and begin the lesson feeling relaxed.

If your lesson starts from home, simply be ready a few minutes before your scheduled time.

Come Ready to Ask Questions

There are no silly questions when learning to drive.

Whether you're unsure about road rules, mirrors, roundabouts or how the lesson will run, your instructor is there to help.

The more you understand, the more confident you'll become.

What You'll Learn

Every first lesson is different, but you can generally expect to cover:

  • Adjusting your seat and mirrors

  • Understanding the vehicle controls

  • Moving off safely

  • Steering techniques

  • Smooth braking

  • Mirror checks

  • Basic road positioning

  • Driving on quiet residential streets

As your confidence grows, you'll gradually move onto busier Adelaide roads and more challenging traffic situations.

Learn at Your Own Pace

Everyone learns differently.

Some students feel confident after one lesson, while others prefer to progress more gradually.

Neither approach is right or wrong.

At Green Light Driver Training, every lesson is personalised to suit your learning style and confidence.

Preparing for Success

Your first driving lesson isn't about being perfect.

It's about building confidence, learning new skills and taking the first step towards becoming a safe, independent driver.
