How to Master Parallel Parking
A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Learner Drivers
Parallel parking is one of the skills that makes many learner drivers nervous.
The good news is that it's far easier than most people expect once you understand the process.
At Green Light Driver Training, we teach learner drivers throughout Adelaide's southern suburbs a simple, repeatable method that builds confidence every time you park.
Why Parallel Parking Matters
Parallel parking is an important everyday driving skill.
You'll use it:
On suburban streets
Near shopping precincts
Around schools
In Adelaide's CBD
During your VORT assessment if required
The more comfortable you become, the less stressful city driving feels.
Step 1
Position your vehicle parallel to the parked car, leaving approximately one metre between the vehicles.
Step 2
Reverse slowly while checking your mirrors and looking over your shoulder.
Observation is critical throughout the entire manoeuvre.
Step 3
Begin turning the steering wheel once your reference point is reached.
Your instructor will teach you simple visual reference points that make this process much easier.
Step 4
Continue reversing slowly while adjusting your steering as the vehicle enters the space.
Remember:
Slow equals control.
Step 5
Straighten the wheels and centre your vehicle within the space.
Aim to finish:
Parallel to the kerb
A safe distance from surrounding vehicles
Without touching the kerb
Common Mistakes
Many learners struggle because they:
Rush
Forget observation
Turn too early
Turn too late
Overcorrect
Panic halfway through
These are all easily improved with practice.
Tips for Success
Move slowly
Keep looking around the vehicle
Use your mirrors
Don't rush corrections
Stay calm
Confidence comes from repetition.
Practise in Different Locations
Once you've mastered quiet residential streets, practise around suburbs such as Glenelg, Brighton, Marion, Blackwood, Plympton and Seaford to build confidence in different environments.
